My Top 11 Hitchcock Films

The first five films could switch places

1. Psycho
The ultimate horror film is also Hitchcock's best voyage into the realm of hopeless love. All Hitchcock's movies are love stories. The love story - the romance - is the foundation of all his films. In his romantic films, the story ends happily with the couple getting each other; not so though in the ironic films (parodies of romantic conventions).

2. North by Northwest
The ultimate chase thriller and the quintessence of a Hitchcock suspense thriller. Incredibly polished with lots of humour and great shots.

3. Shadow of a Doubt
Hitchcock's favourite, and no wonder. Shadow of a Doubt is just brilliant.

4. Blackmail
Very underrated film. Just think about the creativity that is apparent both visually and in the audio track. Must be viewed in its historical context. Sound came to cinema the very year Hitchcock made the movie.

5. Vertigo
Vertigo has the greatest score in film history (Bernard Herrmann).

6. Rebecca

7. Strangers on a Train

8. Rear Window

9. The Lady Vanishes

10. Notorious

11. The 39 Steps
